Creative Writing

This course will provide students with the opportunity to develop a style and voice that reflects their vision.  The course will promote an individualized approach to writing both fiction and nonfiction pieces. The benefits of writing circles, peer editing and conferencing will be explored. Students will also have an opportunity to expand their knowledge of writing by reading other authors’ works.

Course Competencies
  • Given a writing assignment students will employ the writing process of drafting, revision, and proofreading in order to create an effective paper.
  • Given the conventions of standard English grammar students will apply them to their writing with emphasis upon sentence structure, consistency, clarity and precision, logical expression of ideas, and appropriate use of conventions.
  • Given a broad base of published writers students will effectively and insightfully evaluate the techniques of said writers.
  • Students will apply multiple techniques in character development within the context of their own piece of written fiction.
  • Students will apply multiple techniques in the development of setting within the context of their own piece of written fiction.
  • Given the elements of plot structure, students will create a work of fiction that effectively and evidently applies and develops them.
  • Students will formulate and integrate an original theme within the context of an original fictional work.
  • Students will formulate and integrate an assigned point of view within the context of an original fictional work.
  • Given examples of figurative, idiomatic, and symbolic language, students will analyze and apply these in their personal writing.
