News from the Nest: August 24, 2025

    Message from the Principal

Hello Everyone. “News from the Nest” is sent at the beginning of each week so this marks the start of that routine. We are getting super excited to welcome students back for the 2025 - 2026 school year. Please be in touch with any questions.

    Week One

The first day for all students will be Wednesday, August 27th. The day will begin for all students at 7:30AM in the auditorium. The schedule for the first three days of the school year can be found here: First week of 25-26SY. Here is the bell schedule for the school year: Daily Bell Schedule. Please note that our expectation is that all students will participate in the end-of-the-day activities on Wednesday, the 27th.

The first day for CRTC will be Thursday, August 28th. The first CRTC bus leaves promptly at 7:30 and the second CRTC bus leaves promptly at 9:00.

    Open House

Open House will be Thursday, August 28th. Parents will start off in the auditorium at 5:30 and then follow their student’s schedule beginning at 6:00. Here is the Open House Schedule. There will be community groups set-up in the Main Foyer to visit as well during the evening.

Prior to Thursday evening, parents/guardians can sit with their student and record their classes from Alma using this sheet: Open House Student Classes

    Humankind: Be Both

The start of a new school year is an exciting time. It can also be a time of nerves as we all get used to new people, new routines, and a new environment. Please do not hesitate to ask for help, and offer to help, as we begin a new year.

    New State Law

The State of New Hampshire enacted a new law that bans personal communication devices from being used by students throughout the entirety of the school day. This ban includes all personal devices including cell phones, iPads, and laptop computers. Exceptions to this law are identified in a student’s IEP or 504 Plan.

The School Board will be developing a policy for the school district when they meet next; that policy will delineate more specific details. For many of us, this is going to be a significant change. The law states that devices may not be used at all during the school day including lunch, free periods, or passing time between classes. For the first couple days of school we will remind students of this new law but appropriate consequences, such as after school detentions, will be assigned for repeated infractions.

We need the support of families. If you receive a message from a teacher or administrator regarding your student accessing a personal device, please understand that we are doing our best to support our students while adhering to state law. Thank you in advance for your help.

    Lunch

On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday there are two lunches. Each class during Period 5 or 6 is assigned either “A Lunch” or “B Lunch”. Here is when each teacher’s class has lunch: Lunch Assignment.

    Flex

For returning students there have been no changes to “Flex Time” or our “Flex Days”. For new students, 7:30 to 8:15 is designated as “Flex Time”. This is when teachers are available to meet with students and also when some clubs will meet. Half of the teachers are available one day and the other half are available the next day. Teachers will list their availability on their syllabi.

Prior to our first Flex Day (in October) I will send out details about what to expect.

PSAT, ASVAB, and SAT Testing Review

The BHS Math Department will be offering review sessions during flex for the PSAT, ASVAB and SAT testing this year! Our first sessions will be offered on Thursday, 9/11 and Thursday, 9/25 during flex to start reviewing for the PSAT assessment. Review sessions will be in room 2214. Everyone is welcome to join!

    BHS Interact Club

Are you looking to give back to your community? The BHS Interact Club is sponsored by the Bow Rotary and is an International club with a mission to serve the surrounding communities. We are looking for new members that are entering their freshman or sophomore year at BHS. The application for joining us can be found here and is due on Friday, September 19th at 2:50pm in the main office. Please see or email Ms. Barrett (cbarrett@sau67nh.gov) or Mrs. Chaffee (jchaffee@sau67nh.gov) with any questions.

    Senior Breakfast

Thank you to the PTO and Bow / Dunbarton families for helping to put on our traditional Senior Breakfast on Friday at 7:30. Here is a link to sign-up to donate food items: Senior Breakfast

    In the Classroom

Another one of our summer courses was an intensive course on archery, hunter's safety and map and compass skills. Students completed an online Hunter's Education Course through the NH Fish and Game Department prior to the first day of class. Day 1 was a review and application of those topics to prepare for them for the certification test and field day, along with an introduction to archery. Day 2 was the field day and licensing exam along with time to discuss tracking a wounded animal and tree stand safety. Days 3,4,5 were an introduction and practice of various hunting skills and students gained a deeper appreciation of the wilderness we have here in New Hampshire. If this is a course you are interested in learning more about please contact the instructor, Ben Forbes.

    Message from the Principal

Hello Everyone. A couple of weeks ago I sent out a message with a lot of information that can be accessed here: News from the Nest: July 2025. In an effort to help you find the relevant information as we begin a new school year, this message is organized by grade level. Please be in touch with any questions!

    FOR ALL STUDENTS & FAMILIES

    Open House

Open House will be Thursday, August 28th. Parents will start off in the auditorium at 5:30 and then follow their student’s schedule beginning at 6:00. Here is the Open House Schedule.

    Fall Sports

Fall Sports registration is open. Please register your student-athlete here: BHS Athletic Page (Registration)

    Assistance

Throughout the year your student may choose to take part in an activity that has a fee. Examples include club outings, the Junior/Senior Prom, or class trips. We never want finances to limit a student’s opportunity to participate in the life of the school. If there is concern about any fees please reach out directly to either me or your student’s school counselor so we can assist.

Additionally, we have a Care Closet established in the BHS library that has items of necessity as well as Bow High School gear that are available for students to take.

    Cell Phone Ban

Cell phones and personal devices cannot be used at all during the school day. This includes class time, free periods, passing time, and during lunch. The staff at all of our buildings, the SAU, and the School Board are discussing implementation of this new state law. Prior to the first day of school we will provide more specific details and answers to questions that have been raised.

    In the Classroom

We are fortunate at Bow High School to have the opportunity to offer summer courses to our students which allow them to keep learning in the summer months. One of the classes that ran this summer is Senior Seminar which was taught by Joy Dustin. Senior Seminar is a class in which students design a project of their choice, conduct research, and then present to the larger community. A couple of our students this summer, Derek Baier, Jasmine Ramirez, and Ben Watford, ran a robotics camp for younger students as part of this course. It was a lot of fun to visit the room and see our high school Seniors leading younger students through fun and educational activities. Pam Cafasso, one of our excellent science teachers, helped oversee this camp and gave of her time to make it a success.

News from the Nest: July 2025

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from Bow High School. I hope this message finds everyone enjoying the summer months and spending time with family and friends. Each week, once the school year begins, I send out a message with information pertaining to the school. This message includes some important information as well as forms that need to be signed (near the end of this message you will find all the forms that need to be completed grouped together).

The theme for this coming school year is “Humankind: Be Both”. There is a story that a student once asked anthropologist Margaret Mead what she believed was the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture. Expecting a technical answer to their question the student was surprised by her response: “The first sign of civilization is a broken femur that has healed.” She went on to explain that in the wild, a broken bone usually meant death. An injured animal couldn’t hunt, flee, or find water, and without help, it would perish alone. Nature doesn’t pause, wait, or care.

But a healed femur told a different story. It meant someone saw the injury, stopped their own life to look after the injured individual, staying long enough for them to recover. For Mead, this was the true beginning of civilization: the moment when empathy overcame instinct. When caring became an act of collective survival.

As we head into a new school year let’s remember to always practice compassion and empathy towards one another and be both human and kind.

    New Student Orientation and Tour

The BHS School Counseling Department will be hosting an Orientation and Tour of the school for new BHS students on August 20th (9:00-11:00) and August 21st (1:00-3:00). Students should attend one of these dates if possible and will have a chance to see where their classes meet. During this time students will also be given their Chromebook. Please bring this completed form with you (there will be blank copies available as well) Chromebook Permission Use (9th Grade and All New Students). Parents are welcome to attend orientation with their student(s).

    Opening of School

The first day for all students will be Wednesday, August 27th. The schedule for the first three days of the school year can be found here: First week of 25-26SY. Here is the bell schedule for the school year: Daily Bell Schedule

    Open House

Open House will be Thursday, August 28th. Parents will start off in the auditorium at 5:30 and then follow their student’s schedule beginning at 6:00. Here is the Open House Schedule.

    Message about Transportation

Please be aware that school bus transportation is not assigned automatically for BHS students, and you will need to arrange transportation by contacting bus coordinator Erin Smith at erinsmith@sau67nh.gov .

    Advisory

We are excited to reintroduce an advisory to Bow High School. The mission of our Advisory Program is to create opportunities to explore interests, build relationships, and develop skills to empower students. Advisory fosters meaningful connections in an environment in which every student is valued.

Advisory meets twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, for 20 minutes. Here is the schedule for the days we have advisories: Bell Schedule. To create room in our schedule for the advisory we will have one lunch on Tuesdays and Fridays to maintain instructional time. Those with Junior/Senior Privileges, and wish leave the building Period 7 or 8, will be able to leave at the same time on advisory days as they can on other days.

Here are some additional details about advisory:

    • Advisories are randomly assigned by grade level to staff members.
    • Each advisory will have about 13 students.
    • Advisory will be added to student schedules prior to the first day of school.
    • Advisory is a required school activity and attendance will be taken.

Connections between staff and students that provide the opportunity to foster a positive school culture have been shown by research to positively impact both attendance and academic performance. We look forward to implementing an advisory that will benefit the school community and look forward to gathering feedback throughout the year.

    School Meetings

Last year we began running school meetings. We had the Adjunct General of the New Hampshire Army National Guard come speak to students, a trivia contest between staff and students, a performance by a world-class pianist, and a talk by an outdoorsman on overcoming challenges. These meetings are another way we build community through shared experiences and, at the same time, offer opportunities to hear from special guests.

It is our expectation that students attend both advisory and school meetings as they would other academic classes. Unless a student has an appointment we ask that parents not dismiss their student from these obligations.

    Athletic Registration

Sign-ups for Fall Sports are now underway. Please follow this link to the BHS Athletic Page and the registration form through FinalForms: BHS Athletic Page (Registration)

    Parking

Based on feedback from the BHS Student Senate we are changing how students park this coming school year. The first student lot will be designated as the “Senior Lot”. Only Seniors with a senior parking permit (unique color) will be allowed to park in the first lot. The other student lots are open for students to park in any legal parking space with a permit. This includes seniors if the Senior Lot is full. Although each spot is numbered, students will not have an assigned parking spot in the student lots; they can park in any open student spot. If a student does not wish to purchase a permit they may park for free in the dirt lot at the entrance to Falcon Way.

Parking permits will be on sale the week of August 18th, Monday through Friday 8:00 to 3:00. Because there are no assigned spots students do not need to rush to get a permit on the first day and can come by anytime that week. Students need to bring their license, registration, check ($40 made out to Bow High School), and the signed Parking Agreement. If you have any questions please review the Student Parking FAQ sheet or contact Assistant Principal Brenda Barth at bbarth@sau67nh.gov.

    Cell Phone Ban

The New Hampshire State Legislature passed, and the Governor signed, a bill that bans cell phone use “bell to bell” in New Hampshire schools. This means that all students in the state will not be able to use their cell phones or personal devices for any reason throughout the entirety of the school day including lunch, in the hallways, in the bathroom, or during “free” periods. Exceptions included in the law are for students with medical, language, or special education needs as determined in an IEP or 504 Plan.

We are going to need families to help and support us as we follow this new law. Ideally, students will leave their phones at home or in their vehicle. We cannot, as dictated by law, allow students access to their phones. If a message needs to get to a student it must come through the Main Office.

For some students this new law is going to be a significant change in their daily routine. It would benefit students to begin lessening their cell phone usage during the summer so that it isn’t as big of a change when school starts at the end of August. Thank you for your help.

    Assistance for Students

Throughout the year your student may choose to take part in an activity that has a fee. Examples include club outings, the Junior/Senior Prom, or class trips. We never want finances to limit a student’s opportunity to participate in the life of the school. If there is concern about any fees please reach out directly to either me or your student’s school counselor so we can assist.

Additionally, we have a Care Closet established in the BHS library that has items of necessity as well as Bow High School gear that are available for students to take.

    Pictures and School IDs

Pictures for students will be taken on 8/27 and 8/28 during the day. Students should plan to have their picture taken during their prep/open period. Students in 9th grade will go down with their “Falcon Time” group for their pictures.

All students need to have their picture taken for school ID. This includes seniors who may have previously done a Senior Portrait or Yearbook picture.

    SAT Results

Last April students in Grade 11 took the required state assessment (the SAT). I am pleased to report that Bow High School increased its overall average score from previous years and scored 50 points higher than the state average of all NH schools, and 60 points higher than the average of NH public schools (BHS: 1055, State of NH: 1005, State of NH Public Schools: 995).

    Student Handbook

Bow High School has a digital handbook that can be found on our website: BHS Student Handbook. This handbook includes policies and procedures that are important for students to be familiar with prior to the start of the school year.

Once you have reviewed the handbook, please have BOTH the student and a parent complete the digital form. Thank you. Student Handbook Acknowledgement Form

Junior and Senior Privilege (formerly “Open Campus”)

Students in 11th and 12th grade have the privilege of signing out at the front desk and leaving the building when they do not have a scheduled obligation (Class, Advisory, School Meeting) as long as permission is granted by a parent/guardian. If you would like your student to have this privilege please read and complete the following digital form: Junior & Senior Privilege. This form needs to be completed by both the student and parent/guardian.

This privilege may be revoked due to unexcused absences, behavior, or academic standing. Junior and Senior Privilege is not accessible to students in grades 9 or 10. Please contact Assistant Principal Brenda Barth (bbarth@sau67nh.gov) with any questions.

    Media Consent

Please take time to review the following form which explains our media procedures and includes an opt-out option: Media Consent Form

    Free and Reduced Lunch

The following link will open information and an application for free and reduced lunch: Free & Reduced Lunch Info and Application If you have any questions please contact Tyfany Carbone at tcarbone@sau67nh.gov .

    Forms to Complete

To help with organization, here are the forms all in one spot that need to be completed:

    In the Classroom

When school ended, and summer began, over twenty students had the opportunity to take a class focused on the Second World War. This class, taught by Mr. Derek DeAngelis and Dr. Paul Cohen, had students learn about the causes of the war, how the war was fought, and the impact the war had on civilians and soldiers alike. Students read the novel The Bedford Boys and had the opportunity to visit Battleship Cove in Fall River Massachusetts and the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro, NH. For the final assessment students researched and put together a project on a topic of their choice from World War II.

    Message from the Principal

The last week of school brings a mix of emotions for students and staff alike. There is excitement, anticipation, sadness, and joy all mixed together. For me, there is one emotion that I am feeling more than any other as the year comes to a conclusion and that is a feeling of pride in our school community. I have said it several times before and I truly mean it: we have the best staff of any school in the state and our students make coming to work a joy each and every day. To those of you graduating, congratulations and I am excited to celebrate with you on Friday. To the students returning to BHS in the fall, get some relaxation this summer and enjoy time with friends and family. To my colleagues, thank you for everything you do for our students and each other. And to the members of our greater school community, thank you for sharing your students with us and the unconditional support the towns of Bow and Dunbarton give to our school.

The Commencement Ceremony for members of the Class of 2025 will take place Friday, June 13th at 4:00PM at Sullivan Arena on the campus of Saint Anselm College. Prior to then there are two mandatory graduation rehearsals: June 12th at BHS (beginning at 12:00PM) and June 13th at Saint Anselm (9:00AM). All graduating seniors are required to attend both rehearsals.

This coming week we have classes Monday through Thursday with Friday being designated a Recovery Day. The Recovery Day allows students to complete assessments prior to the end of the school year to either earn credit for a course or qualify for summer competency recovery. If a student needs to attend the Recovery Day they will be notified by their teacher.

It has been a pleasure working with the students and families of BHS this year: please continue to keep in touch and have a great week!

    From the Nurse’s Office

If your student has any controlled medication that is stored at the school, a guardian needs to be the one to come in and pick it up; we cannot give medication to students to carry home. Please make arrangements to come in and pick medications up this week and let me know if you have any questions.

    Senior Events this Week.

Monday is the Boston Harbor Cruise. Students who purchased tickets should plan to arrive at BHS by 3:45PM for a 4:00PM departure. Dress for this event is semi-formal. I anticipate arriving back at BHS between 11:00PM and 11:30PM.

Wednesday is the Six Flags Trip. Students who are going to the park should arrive at 7:45AM to board buses.

Thursday is a busy day. The Senior BBQ is from 11:00 - 12:00. At 12:00 graduation rehearsal begins. This rehearsal includes the class photograph, distribution of caps and gowns, visits to the other 3 schools in the SAU, and a walk-through of the ceremony. This practice will go until 3:00PM.

Sports Awards take place on Thursday as well with a BBQ at 5:00PM followed by the awards at 6:00PM.

Friday is the big day! Graduation rehearsal will begin promptly at 9:00AM. This rehearsal is usually two hours in length. The Commencement Ceremony begins at 4:00PM. Students should plan to arrive no later than 3:15PM and head to where they will line up.

    A Note about Commencement

At the conclusion of the Commencement Ceremony there is a formal recessional. The band will be playing the recessional while staff form a tunnel that graduates walk through as a final congratulations and farewell. Please remain in your seats until the last graduate has departed.

    In the Classroom

For the final highlight from the school this year I want to recognize a group of people who are indispensable in the life of BHS and support what happens in the classroom; our amazing kitchen crew. Each day they serve breakfast and lunch along with running a cafe for students looking for a snack throughout the day. In the past several weeks the crew has begun to offer Smoothie Bowls which have been a huge hit, along with the always popular taco bar that they put out monthly.

Leading the crew at BHS has been Nicole Provencher who is moving on to a new career at the end of this school year. Nikki has been more than a chef and kitchen manager during her tenure. She has been a friendly welcomer as students come into the cafeteria, someone that students confide and joke along with, and a supporting colleague to everyone in the building. Nikki and her staff notice when students aren’t eating or look upset and they make the effort to support each student who they feed on a daily basis. We have been lucky to have Nikki on our staff and we wish her all the best!

    Message from the Principal

To quote Ferris Bueller: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” We are fast approaching the end of the school year and before we know it we will be gathered together at Sullivan Arena at Saint Anselm College celebrating the Class of 2025. Prior to then we have a number of events taking place which are included at the end of this message. I encourage students, and their families, to take time to slow down and enjoy the moments you all have together during the last weeks of the academic year.

Congratulations to the students who graduated CRTC this past Thursday. I was so proud to hear the names of our students called when they received their completion certificates, as well as the number of our students who received awards and recognitions. CRTC is an outstanding program and prepares students for careers after graduation. Kudos to our BHS Seniors!

This message has several pieces of information specific to our graduating students as well as items for students to be aware of as we wind down the year. I hope you have a terrific week.

    Senior Parade

The Senior Parade is back! The parade will begin at Bow Public Works (12 Robinson Road). Line-up can begin at 10:30AM with a start time of exactly 11:00AM. The route goes from the Public Works facility to Knox Road. From there the parade crosses onto White Rock Hill and ends behind the high school. Students are encouraged to decorate their vehicles - have fun with it!

Bow PD has requested that students drive safely throughout the parade and that any students in the back of a truck remain seated throughout the route. Please do not hang out of windows or do anything that obstructs the view of divers and remain on the right side of the road. Bow PD will both lead and finish the parade to help ensure safety. Thank you to them as well as the Board of Selectmen for approving this event.

The bbq that has previously been associated with this event will be on Thursday, June 12th prior to the first graduation rehearsal.

    Senior Awards and Scholarships

Senior Awards and Scholarship Night takes place on Monday at 6:00PM. All members of the Class of 2025 and their families are invited, and encouraged, to attend.

    Wednesday, June 4th

Wednesday is “Future Plans” day. Students are encouraged to wear a shirt or other article of clothing that celebrates their future plans (for instance, a military tee shirt, a college sweatshirt, an employer's hat). I am looking forward to seeing where all of our students are heading off to upon graduation.

    Seniors!

Before the graduation ceremony begins there is a slideshow that includes thank you messages and photos. We are still missing a number of photos from seniors. Please send them ASAP, if you haven’t already done so, to Linda Edmonds at ledmonds@bownet.org.

    Friday, June 6th

Friday is going to be an 8-period day. We are doing this to balance out the number of Even/Odd days on the calendar and to give our seniors an opportunity to return material to each of their classes and complete their Checkout List (Friday is the last day of classes for Seniors). Here is the schedule for the day: June 06, 2025

    Yearbooks for 2025-2026 School Year

    In the Classroom

This past Wednesday students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math courses put on the annual STEAM Fest at BHS. Some of the displays included making a robot hand, lemonade produced by a robot, building structurally strong homes, and how to make elephant toothpaste. High school students created interactive experiences for others and explained their experiments to visitors. Teaching others is one of the best ways to learn a topic and I was impressed with both the displays as well as the thoroughness of the explanations our students gave. Thank you to all of our teachers who helped their students prepare for this event and for sharing your passion with others!

    News from the Nest: 5/25/25

    Message from the Principal

Greetings from BHS. Congratulations to equestrian team captain Molly Grant who received the NHHSET scholarship and was also the season high point rider in her division. We are very proud of Molly's achievement in her senior year. Congratulations as well to our music department who put on an excellent concert on Thursday. I continue to be impressed with how hard-working our musicians are here at Bow High School.

Thank you to Derek DeAngelis for organizing our Memorial Day Recognition that we did this past Friday. It is important to take time to pause and remember those who have served our country in times of war and peace. My hope is that as students move on from Bow High School they will continue to look for ways to honor and pay tribute to our military veterans.

On Wednesday we will have our final school meeting of the year. Our improv group, The Taters, will perform among other updates. Here is the schedule for Wednesday: May 28, 2025 Schedule

I hope you have a great week.

    STEAM Fest

For the past several years students and staff have put on a STEAM Fest showcasing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. This event is open to all and we encourage families with younger students to bring them by the school to check out the interactive displays. Last year the robotics team let me drive their machine and, although I was pretty lousy, it was a ton of fun! STEAM Fest gets underway at 5:00 on Wednesday.

    Seniors!

Before the graduation ceremony begins there is a slideshow that includes thank you messages and photos. We are still missing a number of photos from seniors. Please send them ASAP, if you haven’t already done so, to Linda Edmonds at ledmonds@bownet.org.

    Science SAS (State Mandated Test)

The make-up session for state-mandated Science SAS is scheduled for Tues 5/27 from 12:00-2:00pm. All students who are making up the test will need to eat A lunch on Tuesday, and arrive at room 2315 no later than 12:00 with their charged Chromebooks. Any students who missed the 5/21 test administration: please be sure to attend.

    Graduation Raffle

Due to the size of the venue hosting graduation there is no limit on tickets for our graduation ceremony. There are also no assigned seats for graduation; families and guests can sit in any open seat.

    In the Classroom

Students in Mike McKilen’s Latin 3 class have been working on a script based on I, Claudius. In addition to writing out the script students are acting out what they wrote to produce a short film. One of the things I admire about the staff at Bow High School is the way that they find engaging ways for students to learn material. By having students engage in this activity Mr. McKilen is helping them gain a deeper understanding of what they have been studying.

If you know of students at BMS, or students here at BHS, who have not yet taken a language, I strongly encourage you to have them speak to their school counselors about trying one out. When students study another language their grasp of grammar and syntax in their native language is strengthened and it allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the people who speak the language they are studying.
