Medication Administration at School

All prescribed medications that need to be taken during the school day or during school-sponsored activities must be brought to the health office and administered under the supervision of the school nurse, in accordance with NH Ed. 311.02.

Prescribed medications must
  • Be accompanied by a written provider’s order
  • Include written parental/guardian permission
  • Be in the original, properly labeled pharmacy container

Tip: Many pharmacies will provide separate labeled bottles for home and school use upon request. A Medication Administration Form must be completed and submitted to the health office.

To be approved for self-carry, the following must be provided annually:

  • Written authorization from the parent/guardian
  • Written authorization from the healthcare provider

Families should also submit an Emergency Action Plan from their healthcare provider for conditions such as:

  • Asthma
  • Life-threatening allergies
  • Seizure disorders
  • Diabetes
Pain Management During School

It is not recommended that students take narcotic pain medication during the school day. If a student is experiencing pain severe enough to require narcotic medication, it is best for them to remain at home for appropriate care and monitoring.
