Going to College

School Counselors work with students to develop individualized, well rounded and balanced college lists. Students typically apply

The List Should Include

  • "Likely" Schools- the student is above the average admissions criteria.
  • "Target" Schools- the student is the average admissions criteria.
  • "Reach" Schools- the student is just below the average admissions criteria.

College Lists

  • By the end of Junior year, students should have a list of "Colleges I'm Thinking About."
  • At the start of Senior year, students should move schools from the "Colleges I'm Thinking About" to a finalized "Colleges I'm Applying To" list.

College Visits

  • A key part of deciding which college to attend is finding a good fit. A great way to get more information is to visit the colleges in person. Of course, visiting colleges may not be possible for everyone, but it’s a good idea to make the trips, if you can. It can help you determine whether a college is the right place for you. To set up a college visit go to the admissions page on a schools website and follow the instructions to set up a college visit/tour. Most registrations are completed online.
  • All Bow High School students will have the opportunity to attend a college visit with the School Counseling Department during their junior year.

College Interviews

  • Some colleges recommend or require an interview as part of their admissions process. This is a great way for the admissions counselor to meet the student and learn more than just what is on the paper application. Check each schools admissions requirements on their website to determine if interviews are available, recommended or required and the steps to set up an interview.
