    Message from the Principal

This week we will have our first Flex Day of the year. Juniors will be taking the PSATs and need to arrive at 7:30AM to be set-up in their testing location.

Flex Days are intended to provide students the opportunity to get individualized instruction if they are struggling in a course prior to the end of the semester when it may be too difficult to recover academically. There are many events that take place on Flex Days and the design of the day is to provide both support and enrichment opportunities for students. Some students will receive an email with an individualized schedule of appointments for the day. Teachers identify who they need to meet with and I send a message to the student and their contacts. These appointments are required and attendance will be taken. There may be other opportunities that teachers provide and those will be communicated directly with their classes.

If a student is not taking the PSAT, or they do not have an appointment, they are encouraged to be productive in other ways. For some students this can be a great opportunity to work on college applications and college essays. For other students, this can be a good opportunity to explore post high school careers, participate in community service, work on long-term assignments for a class, or engage in other projects of interest to them. Please note that Seniors who are part of CRTC will still go to Concord as normal.

Please reach out to me or your student’s school counselor if you have any questions about Wednesday.

I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming long weekend.

    Auditions

Auditions for the Fall Play will be held Monday, October 6th, from 6 to 9PM. Here is the form to sign up for an audition time: Play Auditions

    BEA Blood Drive

The annual BEA Blood Drive will occur October 21st, 11:00 - 4:00, in the BHS Mini-Gym. Please encourage friends and neighbors to come and donate.

    Driving around BHS

Over the past week we have seen vehicles driving the wrong way down a one-way road to avoid traffic, cars driving on the wrong side of the road, and cars driving above the speed limit. I know that it can be frustrating at dismissal time to have to wait in a line but the safety of students and staff has to be the top priority.

At the same time, all of us need to utilize the crosswalks. I have seen cars needing to slam on their brakes because they have had people walk out in front of them. It is worth the extra 20 seconds to cross at the crosswalk and avoid dangerous situations. Thank you for your help.

    Bell Schedule

I appreciate the staff and students who have shared feedback regarding the bell schedule. As a result of that feedback we will be making some small adjustments so that there are more consistent start and end times to each period, and to make sure that the length of each period is the same. This new schedule will go into effect on Tuesday, October 14th: Modified Bell Schedule

BHS Student Senate will gather more feedback at the end of the year about potential changes for next year.

    In the Classroom

Students in BEST classes spent the week outside at our Ropes Course. The Ropes Course has elements such as a zip line, giant swing, and different climbing obstacles. When students were not on the elements themselves they participated in spotting and cheering on their classmates. The Ropes course is both a physical and mental challenge and my favorite thing was watching the students support each other and encouraging each other to, literally, climb higher. Kudos to our BEST Department who arrive to school early and leave late, while giving up professional time, to provide this experience to our students.

News from the Nest: September 28, 2025

    Message from the Principal

This past week we received notice that four of our students were recognized as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Those students are Colton Currier, Alexandra Edraos, Anna Gallaher, and Eliana Mears. Congratulations to these outstanding students who will be recognized at our next School Meeting. Also, congratulations to National Merit Scholar Semi-finalist Julia Hou. To be named a semi-finalist is an incredible achievement and a testament to her hard work. Julia will be recognized at Senior Awards night in June. The entire school community is proud of these students and their accomplishments.

Students are identified for the National Merit Scholarship Program through the PSAT. Bow High School will be proctoring the PSAT for Juniors on Wednesday, October 8th. Our awesome math department has been hosting PSAT practice sessions and, due to the number of students who have been interested in attending, they will offer another practice session on October 7th during Flex time.

Thursday, October 2nd, is National Custodian Appreciation Day. We are lucky at BHS to have the crew that we do here. In addition to all the work they do to clean our building and fix anything that is broken they also run clubs, attend games and concerts, and support our students. They are the best.

I hope you all have a great week; please be in touch anytime.

    Auditions

Auditions for the Fall Play will be held Monday, October 6th, from 6 to 9PM. Here is the form to sign up for an audition time: Play Auditions

    Bell Schedule

Some feedback we have received is that having different start and end times for class periods throughout the week can be a challenge. We are looking at making some small changes to the bell schedule to make for a more consistent routine for students and staff. More information will be coming soon.

    Academic Progress

As we enter the second full month of school, this is a good time for students and families to check on academic progress. If a student is struggling in a course there are several supports we have available:

    • Flex Time is every morning from 7:30 to 8:15. This is an opportunity to meet with teachers for extra help or to make up assessments. If a student has a failing mark in any course they should be in attendance during Flex.
    • The National Honor Society offers peer tutoring. By contacting a student’s school counselor this can be arranged. Students can also use this form to sign up for tutoring: NHS Tutoring Request Form
    • Students are encouraged to email or talk to their teacher to identify areas to focus on to improve grades and their understanding of course content.
    • Tutor.com is a free resource for residents of New Hampshire. Online assistance is available after school hours while students are home working on assignments.

To successfully graduate high school students need to earn credit. Certain courses, such as American Dream, are required for graduation and must be passed to be able to earn credit and advance academically. If you have any questions please reach out to me, Svea Schreiner (Academic Dean) or your student’s school counselor.

    Cell Phones

As we mark the end of the first month of school, and implementation of a new law around cell phones, we have begun to see more phones out in the hallways. Students have been issued detentions and phones have been stored in the Main Office. Best practice for students is to turn their phone off and leave it in their backpack, locker, or car. Thank you for your help and support with this law.

Upcoming Events from the School Counseling Department

    • AP Exam Registration – Forms and payment due by Friday, October 3, 2025.
    • PSAT – Wednesday, October 8 at 7:45 AM.
    • Apply NH – Thursday, October 23; seniors can apply to NH colleges for free and enter a $500 scholarship drawing.
    • UNH College Tour – Wednesday, October 30, 8:30 AM–1:30 PM; open to interested juniors and seniors (sign-up info coming soon).

    Bass Fishing

Congratulations to our Bass Fishing Team for qualifying for the state competition.

    Drought Update

The Commissioner of Education has asked that schools share some information regarding the drought conditions the state has been experiencing. This document shares some updates and information that may be helpful to New Hampshire residents: Drought Update

    In the Classroom

Philosophy is one of the new classes that we are offering this year. This week, students in Jon Cannon’s Philosophy course discussed different theories of knowledge and how philosophers define “truth”. There are countless ways that philosophy can be applied to student’s lives and current events and this course is a great example of adopting a classical course to modern school.

News from the Nest: September 21, 2025

    Message from the Principal

Thank you to Kate Kulacz, Dan Attori, Emily Rider, Nicole Heath, and Martha Rae for all their work in organizing and running a college fair and college information night for seniors this past week. I encourage students and families to reach out to their school counselor if they have any questions about the process.

We have a busy week with classes, clubs and sports. Soon we will be hosting auditions for the Fall Play and as soon as that is announced I will publish those times here. I would like to remind families that if a fee or cost for an activity would prevent your student from participating you can reach out to me or their school counselor and we will make sure they can take part.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me any time. Have a great week.

AP Exam Registration – Deadline October 3rd

AP Exam registration forms and payment are due to the School Counseling Office by Friday, October 3, 2025. The cost is $110 per exam. Please make checks payable to: Bow High School (memo: “AP Exam Fee”). After the deadline, a $40 late fee will apply (total $150), and all late registrations must be finalized by March 13, 2026. Families in need of financial assistance are encouraged to contact Ms. Kate Kulacz at kkulacz@sau67nh.gov.

    Picture Retakes

Picture retakes will be this Thursday in the auditorium. Students can come by any time to get their photo redone.

    Traffic

This past week we began our new traffic pattern at dismissal which can be found here: New Traffic Pattern. We learned some things that should help us make the process more efficient and safe. One of the problems we were trying to solve was to limit traffic in front of the building as students crossed to the parking lots. That has been successful but we also need to be mindful of pedestrians behind the building and not pass vehicles on the wrong side of the road. Also, students need to cross in the crosswalks to make it easier on vehicles seeing who is around them. Thank you.

    In the Classroom

Joy Chaffee is one of the talented members of the math departments. In addition to teaching AP Statistics she also teaches Geometry and Introductory Algebra. On Thursday in her Period 7 class, students were working on understanding positive and negative integers and how to solve problems with same and differing signs. Ms. Chaffee and many members of the math department have white boards around the classroom which promotes students getting out of their seats and collaborating with their peers. This strategy allows the teacher to see how students are working through problems and lets them provide immediate feedback.

Beyond her role in the classroom Ms. Chaffee is the co-advisor of both the Sophomore Class and Interact, a group that provides service throughout the community.

    Message from the Principal

A big thank you to Peer Outreach and Tabitha Pauley for all their work in making Homecoming Week a success. Thank you to the staff who volunteered their time to chaperone the dance on Saturday. Thank you as well to the Senior Class Advisors, Dan Attori and Joe Conti, who did a lot this week to organize the dance. Lastly, thank you to Mike Desilets and Julie Guerrette in the Athletic Department for all of their efforts this past weekend to set-up and manage all of the home games we hosted.

This week we have a school meeting on Wednesday in which students will have the opportunity to learn about and sign up for clubs. Involvement in school activities has shown to positively impact student attendance and academic performance. I encourage students to check out the offerings we have and get involved in all the school has to offer.

I hope you all have a great week.

College Fair and Senior Family Night

There will be a college fair on Thursday, 11-1, in the BHS gym. That evening our school counseling department will host a college information night for Senior families. In addition to learning about the college process and how to apply, there will be special guests presenting about financial aid opportunities available to families. This program will be at 6:00PM in the BHS auditorium.

    Traffic

I am sure that everyone has seen how tough traffic can be at dismissal time. The problem we are experiencing is that cars are backing up on Falcon Way which prevents buses from making their way through and it poses a safety issue if there were ever a medical emergency. In consultation with our School Resource Officer, we are going to begin a new traffic pattern on Monday, September 15th: New Traffic Pattern. Families picking up students will loop behind the building and begin pick-up across from the Pre-K playground. In addition to clearing up the road this should also make for a quicker, and safer, exit from the school grounds.

    In the Classroom

Sam Dixon wears many hats at BHS. In addition to his role managing the library, Sam is also an information media specialist who teaches students about research skills. This week Mr. Dixon visited a Senior Seminar class in which he showed students how to use the academic databases the school has at its disposal. Mr. Dixon gave students techniques on how best to refine their searches to find the information that they are looking for as they begin work on their senior project. The skills and knowledge Mr. Dixon shares with students allows them to become better consumers of information.

    Message from the Principal

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. We have a very busy week ahead culminating in our first dance of the year on Saturday. We are also hosting our first night game this week with our brand new lights on the Premier Field. I hope to see many of you at events throughout the week; please be in touch if you need anything.

    Homecoming and Spirit Days

Homecoming is this coming weekend. September 12th we will have a Pep Rally in the afternoon and most of our teams will be in action culminating in a Friday Night Lights Football game on the Premier Field. The following day will be the first dance of the year. Check out this poster for the different dress theme days for Homecoming Week: Homecoming Dress Themes

    Homecoming Dance

The Homecoming Dance is Saturday from 7:00PM - 10:00PM in the BHS gym. Tickets are on sale for $10 this week. If you are bringing a guest from another school this form must be completed and turned in no later than Thursday: Guest Form. If you have any questions please contact Assistant Principal Brenda Barth.

Please be aware that once a student departs from the dance they will not be able to come back inside. There will be some drinks and snacks available for purchase at the dance. This dance benefits the Senior Class and helps pay for senior events.

    Attendance

I am sure it will not come as a surprise that there is a strong correlation between attendance and academic performance. Nationwide schools have reported that since the Covid Pandemic absentee rates have skyrocketed. I am pleased to report that thus far this school year we are bucking this trend with excellent attendance. Please continue these efforts - they truly make a difference.

    Traffic

    September 11th

For those of us who were teaching when the attacks of September 11, 2001 occurred we will never forget where we were and the students we were with. As we approach the anniversary of this day I encourage everyone to take some time to visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum website to learn more about the day and the acts of heroism that took place. As New Yorker Jeff Parness wrote, and fitting with our theme this year of Humankind: Be Both, “when Americans lend a hand to one another, nothing is impossible. We’re not about what happened on 9/11. We’re about what happened on 9/12.”

    In the Classroom

This week students in Jennifer O’Brienhalla and Tabitha Pauley’s American Dream class began to learn and practice the fundamentals of writing. Among the things that they have begun to practice is how to write a summary based on information they have read and gathered. Students also practiced how to write an email to a teacher to help them communicate effectively with their instructors. “American Dream” is a team-taught humanities class in which students study American History (the 20th century) while reading novels set during the time period. This course meets every day and is one of the academic offerings that is unique to Bow High School.

    In the Classroom

The week before school began, students in Amanda Guilbert’s AP Biology class went on a visit to the Lakes Region. Students went to Squam Lake’s Piper Cove where they met members of AmeriCorps who talked to them about their work and the different techniques they use to collect water samples and data. After showing the students what they do, our students collected their own samples from the water and spent the first couple days of class this week designing labs to show how various factors affect dissolved oxygen in aquatic environments. This is a great example of how our teachers engage students with authentic learning opportunities.

News from the Nest: August 24, 2025

    Message from the Principal

Hello Everyone. “News from the Nest” is sent at the beginning of each week so this marks the start of that routine. We are getting super excited to welcome students back for the 2025 - 2026 school year. Please be in touch with any questions.

    Week One

The first day for all students will be Wednesday, August 27th. The day will begin for all students at 7:30AM in the auditorium. The schedule for the first three days of the school year can be found here: First week of 25-26SY. Here is the bell schedule for the school year: Daily Bell Schedule. Please note that our expectation is that all students will participate in the end-of-the-day activities on Wednesday, the 27th.

The first day for CRTC will be Thursday, August 28th. The first CRTC bus leaves promptly at 7:30 and the second CRTC bus leaves promptly at 9:00.

    Open House

Open House will be Thursday, August 28th. Parents will start off in the auditorium at 5:30 and then follow their student’s schedule beginning at 6:00. Here is the Open House Schedule. There will be community groups set-up in the Main Foyer to visit as well during the evening.

Prior to Thursday evening, parents/guardians can sit with their student and record their classes from Alma using this sheet: Open House Student Classes

    Humankind: Be Both

The start of a new school year is an exciting time. It can also be a time of nerves as we all get used to new people, new routines, and a new environment. Please do not hesitate to ask for help, and offer to help, as we begin a new year.

    New State Law

The State of New Hampshire enacted a new law that bans personal communication devices from being used by students throughout the entirety of the school day. This ban includes all personal devices including cell phones, iPads, and laptop computers. Exceptions to this law are identified in a student’s IEP or 504 Plan.

The School Board will be developing a policy for the school district when they meet next; that policy will delineate more specific details. For many of us, this is going to be a significant change. The law states that devices may not be used at all during the school day including lunch, free periods, or passing time between classes. For the first couple days of school we will remind students of this new law but appropriate consequences, such as after school detentions, will be assigned for repeated infractions.

We need the support of families. If you receive a message from a teacher or administrator regarding your student accessing a personal device, please understand that we are doing our best to support our students while adhering to state law. Thank you in advance for your help.

    Lunch

On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday there are two lunches. Each class during Period 5 or 6 is assigned either “A Lunch” or “B Lunch”. Here is when each teacher’s class has lunch: Lunch Assignment.

    Flex

For returning students there have been no changes to “Flex Time” or our “Flex Days”. For new students, 7:30 to 8:15 is designated as “Flex Time”. This is when teachers are available to meet with students and also when some clubs will meet. Half of the teachers are available one day and the other half are available the next day. Teachers will list their availability on their syllabi.

Prior to our first Flex Day (in October) I will send out details about what to expect.

PSAT, ASVAB, and SAT Testing Review

Our first sessions will be offered on Thursday, 9/11 and Thursday, 9/25 during flex to start reviewing for the PSAT assessment. Review sessions will be in room 2214. Everyone is welcome to join!

    In the Classroom

Another one of our summer courses was an intensive course on archery, hunter's safety and map and compass skills. Students completed an online Hunter's Education Course through the NH Fish and Game Department prior to the first day of class. Day 1 was a review and application of those topics to prepare for them for the certification test and field day, along with an introduction to archery. Day 2 was the field day and licensing exam along with time to discuss tracking a wounded animal and tree stand safety. Days 3,4,5 were an introduction and practice of various hunting skills and students gained a deeper appreciation of the wilderness we have here in New Hampshire. If this is a course you are interested in learning more about please contact the instructor, Ben Forbes.

    Message from the Principal

Hello Everyone. A couple of weeks ago I sent out a message with a lot of information that can be accessed here: News from the Nest: July 2025. In an effort to help you find the relevant information as we begin a new school year, this message is organized by grade level. Please be in touch with any questions!

    FOR ALL STUDENTS & FAMILIES

    Open House

Open House will be Thursday, August 28th. Parents will start off in the auditorium at 5:30 and then follow their student’s schedule beginning at 6:00. Here is the Open House Schedule.

    Fall Sports

Fall Sports registration is open. Please register your student-athlete here: BHS Athletic Page (Registration)

    Assistance

Throughout the year your student may choose to take part in an activity that has a fee. Examples include club outings, the Junior/Senior Prom, or class trips. We never want finances to limit a student’s opportunity to participate in the life of the school. If there is concern about any fees please reach out directly to either me or your student’s school counselor so we can assist.

Additionally, we have a Care Closet established in the BHS library that has items of necessity as well as Bow High School gear that are available for students to take.

    Cell Phone Ban

Cell phones and personal devices cannot be used at all during the school day. This includes class time, free periods, passing time, and during lunch. The staff at all of our buildings, the SAU, and the School Board are discussing implementation of this new state law. Prior to the first day of school we will provide more specific details and answers to questions that have been raised.

    From the Nurse

Please read this message from our school nurse, Taryn Brassard, with important information regarding the start of school

    In the Classroom

We are fortunate at Bow High School to have the opportunity to offer summer courses to our students which allow them to keep learning in the summer months. One of the classes that ran this summer is Senior Seminar which was taught by Joy Dustin. Senior Seminar is a class in which students design a project of their choice, conduct research, and then present to the larger community. A couple of our students this summer, Derek Baier, Jasmine Ramirez, and Ben Watford, ran a robotics camp for younger students as part of this course. It was a lot of fun to visit the room and see our high school Seniors leading younger students through fun and educational activities. Pam Cafasso, one of our excellent science teachers, helped oversee this camp and gave of her time to make it a success.
