Spanish 1

This course will introduce students to Spanish language and culture.  Students will learn basic vocabulary and grammatical concepts and concentrate on the six language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, performing and observing.   Hispanic history, music and art will also be a focus of the course.  Material in level one language courses include time, date, weather, present tense verbs, future tense, adjectives with agreement, possessive, present progressive, numbers, interrogative words, colors.

  • COMMUNICATION: Given opportunities to communicate in writing, orally and manually, the student is able to effectively engage others in a manner appropriate to the level being studied. The student combines vocabulary, grammar, and culture to communicate the themes being studied. Students demonstrate a concerted effort to improve pronunciation and accent.
  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to introduce and greet each other including asking basic questions regarding likes and dislikes.
  2. Students will demonstrate the ability to tell time, talk about the weather and seasons.
  3. Students will demonstrate the ability to talk about personality traits, explain what different people are like using adjectives.
  4. Students will demonstrate that they can talk about their day and that of others in a variety of different scenarios including their day at school, mentioning where things are located within the community, where they go and with whom, extend, accept and decline invitations and tell when events happen.

  6. Students are able to go shopping, express what they prefer, point out specific items and make purchases.
  • COMPREHENSION – Given a variety of assignments appropriate to the level being studied, the student demonstrates an understanding of the language, including thematic vocabulary, written passages, auditory input, and cultural relationships.

Through their own creation of language, students demonstrate that they can utilize the vocabulary, grammatical structures, and culture being studied to successfully participate in class activities and complete out of class assignments.
