Personal Finance & Investing 2

This course will build upon the concepts covered in Personal Finance and Investing I. More emphasis will be given to investing strategies, retirement planning, home ownership, credit and insurance. Successful completion of this course, along with Finance I, will qualify for 3 college credits through Southern New Hampshire University.

Course Competencies
  • Credit: Given a variety of credit options, compute the costs of credit with adjusted balance method, previous balance method and the average daily balance method. Analyze pros and cons of credit.
  • Home Ownership vs Renting: Given a set of real world circumstances, analyze the pros and cons of renting versus buying a home. Home purchase analysis must include the process involved in purchasing a home as well as calculating the cost of a mortgage, along with strategy to save for a down payment.
  • Investing: Students will calculate dividends per share, rates of return, compound interest (using PV and FV formulas) and yields on a variety of investments. Students will set up an investment portfolio so they may track their investments throughout the semester in order to analyze and critique them.
  • Insurance: Compare and contrast types of insurance available to the consumer. Students will analyze the costs associated with purchasing or not purchasing insurance and recognize life events that could change their insurance needs.
  • Financial Decision Making: Students will research a set of real world circumstances and financial information, students will design a budget/savings/investment plan that will allow financial goals to be reached. Specific analysis and predictions must be included in the recommendations that will include retirement plan options. (Sample scenarios: retirement, wedding planning, vacation planning).
