Biotechnology 2

This lab-based course will explore biotechnology techniques related to DNA science and the theory behind them. Students will learn the fundamentals of the immune system. Techniques explored will include protein purification, ELISA, PCR, gel electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting.

School Competencies
  • Interpretation (Problem Solving & Analysis - Foundational)
  • Logical Processing (Problem Solving & Analysis - Foundational)
  • Applied Statistical Analysis (Problem Solving & Analysis - Advanced)
  • Synthesis (Problem Solving & Analysis - Advanced)
  • Ethical Awareness (Wellness - Advanced)
Course Competencies
  • Students will use correct terminology to demonstrate the structure and functions of the immune system, at the cellular and molecular level, both during normal circumstances and when challenged. (ELISA test)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the factors that influence gene expression without altering the sequence of DNA. (Genetics/Epigenetics) (Gel Electrophoresis and PCR)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the bioethical considerations that go into the development of a new biotechnology technique or product.
