BEST 10 is the second one-credit course in Bow High School’s integrated health and physical education program. This course emphasizes healthy relationships and personal and social responsibility. Students study reproductive anatomy and physiology, sexually transmitted diseases, and the prevention of pregnancy through abstinence and the proper use of contraception. Throughout the unit, students will engage in activities that recognize and promote the importance of self-respect within relationships. The drug and alcohol unit will focus on teaching students the physiology of addiction while emphasizing the dangers of adolescent experimentation. The School Counseling Department will work individually and with groups of students on course selection as they prepare for junior year.

Course Competencies
- Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention: Through a variety of topics including nicotine, vaping, alcohol, RX medications and illicit drugs, students will demonstrate an understanding of the negative effects of the use, misuse and abuse of these drugs, including addiction.
- Human Sexuality: Through a variety of topics including the human reproductive systems, Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Infections and Contraception, students will demonstrate knowledge in how sexual contact can cause pregnancy and/or the spread of disease and infection and how abstinence and contraception can help to prevent pregnancy and the spread of disease/infection.
- Physical Fitness: Given a variety of active team, dual, and individual activities, students will challenge themselves emotionally and physically while demonstrating effective communication and cooperation skills.
